Advantages of using an ergonomic mouse over a regular mouse
Extensive use of a mouse during office work may cause strain on the user’s fingers and wrist
When using a regular mouse, a combination of three fingers is required: thumb, middle finger, and index finger, in order to achieve optimal control of the mouse. This position of the hand may cause strain on the muscles and joints, which in turn may cause pain and the development of inflammation and syndromes in the wrist such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
A study conducted at Erasmus University in the Netherlands shows that using an ergonomic mouse that provides support for the fingers and palm significantly reduces the need for three-finger movement and allows the mouse to be operated while maintaining a neutral, strain-free position of the finger muscles. This is in contrast to the hovering finger position required when using a regular mouse, where the hand is in an unnatural position (pronation).
This support stabilizes the fingers and wrist and allows free movement of the finger joints and relieves the load from them.
It has also been found that the placement of the buttons on an ergonomic mouse that provides support for the palm allows them to be operated with a slight bending movement and reduces the accumulated load on the finger joints.
